Risks of Plastic Surgery
You should always confer with a plastic surgeon regarding the benefits and risks of a procedure. For educational purposes, however, let’s take a look at some risks of plastic surgery.
Risks of Plastic Surgery
Unlike surgeries associated with health risks, plastic surgery is almost always an elective surgery undertaken to improve some aspect of your physical appearance. With the prospect of looking better on the horizon, some people fail to take the time to weigh the risks of plastic surgery.
Any medical procedure carries some inherent risks. The human body is a self-contained, complex vessel that functions amazingly well. That being said, it is not always receptive to being tinkered with through surgical procedures. Surgery of all forms has come a long way, but you should understand it is not an automatically successful procedure. There are risks. Some people do not react well to anesthesia. Infections are possible.
You should ask your physician to explain them to you in detail. In fact, they will do so regardless of whether you ask. They will also ask you to sign an informed consent form noting that you understand and accept the risks of plastic surgery.
In more general terms, there can be bigger risks to plastic surgery. This biggest risk is known as unrealistic expectations. Prior to pursuing plastic surgery, you should consult with your plastic surgeon on the results you can reasonably expect. Look at before and after photographs of other patients with the physician. More importantly, actually listen to what he or she is saying. If you gloss over their advice with your own expectations, you run the risk of being very disappointed after surgery.
A quick word about photographs you see in the media. You should not rely on such photographs in developing an opinion regarding the results you want. Nearly every media publication uses digital software to not only touch up photographs, but make major improvements to the model shown. These images are the stuff of fantasy, and even plastic surgery may not be able to make your fantasy come true.
You can eliminate a big risk of plastic surgery by developing reasonable expectations. As to the other risks of plastic surgery, consult with your plastic surgeon.
