Rhinoplasty Revisions – Understanding The Challenges

Rhinoplasty is one of the more popular cosmetic procedures. When results don’t meet your goals, rhinoplasty revisions can be performed so long as you understand the challenges.

The nose is right smack dab in the middle of our face, which means it is also dead center in a person’s field of vision when speaking with us. If your nose is shaped in a manner that bothers you, it can really annoy you and even sap your confidence. The answer may well be a surgical intervention known a rhinoplasty. Most just refer to it by the inelegant name of the “nose job.”

Despite what you hear, neither the medical profession nor doctors are perfect. Procedures do not always come out perfectly. A small deviation is normally okay, but it can be very problematic if it involves your nose. Given its location on your face, getting it just right can be more important than in other procedures.

A “bad” result can often lead to a recommendation for what is known as a rhinoplasty revision. This is essentially a second surgery wherein the surgeons attempt to fix the perceived defect of the first surgery. That being said, there can be real challenges when it comes revisions. There is only so much material in the nose structure. Your doctor is going to have to deal with scar tissue, reduced modifiable material and even blood circulation issues. A quality surgeon can do it, but the chances of things going less than well are more pronounced than with the original surgery.

As with the initial surgery, the decision to go with a revision can be a difficult one. On one hand, the benefits may be the nose you desired in the first place. On the other hand, it is easy to fall down a slippery slope when it comes to procedures on the nose. One surgery leads to another and suddenly you are Michael Jackson with a host of structural problems.

So, should you undergo a rhinoplasty revision or not? It is your decision. The majority of cases will produce a good result. Make sure to sit down with your plastic surgeon and discuss the risks compared to the prospects for a realistic outcome. Only then will you have enough information to decide for yourself.
