Nipple Augmentation

Nipple augmentation is normally performed on men and women who have undergone one or other breast surgery. There are a number of reasons for this.

Nipple Augmentation

Post-operative patients who have enlarged nipples, inverted nipples or asymmetrical nipples are usually considered good candidates for the nipple augmentation procedure. Inverted nipples are usually caused by a lack of breast tissue resulting in a depressed areola region. When the areola area of the breast extends abnormally beyond the nipple, giving the region an elongated appearance, then it is considered to be an enlarged nipple. Asymmetrical nipples are usually the result of breast surgery or the ageing processes that move the nipple relative to the shape of the breast.

Before embarking on this procedure it is always best to consult a board certified surgeon. There are a number of contra-indications such as future breast feeding, which would preclude you from having the operation. It is wise to consider where the operation will take place. Although the procedure lasts approximately one hour and you can be home the same day, you will want to consider all the safety aspects. As in any surgery there are risks which increase should you wish to have a general anaesthetic. It is therefore recommended that you consider the benefits of utilising a hospital facility rather than your doctor’s office. In the case of an emergency it is best to have the required staff and equipment close at hand.

Nipple augmentation involves cutting the tissue of the nipple or the areola, sometimes both. Some tissue may be removed and the nipple region may be re-positioned as required. Following the procedure a bandage is applied and pain-reducing medication is prescribed. As the process is quite quick and relatively painless, recovery is quite rapid. You may experience some bruising and swelling which is absolutely normal. The nipple may be sensitive for a few months but this usually decrease with time.

Recovery times vary and complications are minimal. Provided you follow the post operative directions your doctor prescribes, there should be few problems. As with any surgical procedure there is the risk of infection or excessive bleeding. There have been reported incidences of damage to nerves in the nipple area. You may also have a certain degree of scar tissue visible, which will diminish over time.

As with any cosmetic surgery, nipple augmentation results vary. The effects may only be seen a few months after the operation. Your doctor should inform you fully before surgery so that your expectations are met and you derive the most benefit from the procedure.
