Plastic Surgery A $15 Billion Industry In China

The Chinese are getting a taste for western ways as money floods into their country. This is shown by the fact plastic surgery has become a $15 billion industry in China.

Americans are vane, egotistical lazy folks. Chinese are hard working, humble folks. Right? Well, it seems to be something far more than that. The issue appears to be money. Those who have it…spend it! The United States is known to have a robust plastic surgery market, but here comes China to take us on.

Plastic surgery is a relatively new phenomenon in China. It was actually banned by the Communist government until 1980. Apparently being good looking wasn’t good for the party. Regardless, that changed as China started to bring in big revenues and people had more than enough money to spend. While the vast majority of China is still very poor, the management class and above it are very wealthy.

The top procedures in China are sought out by Chinese women who desire a more western approach. The top surgery is known as the double eyelid. It is a reconstruction that lifts the top eyelid to create a more European look for women’s eyes. Other very popular procedures are restricted to the face as well including jaw reshaping, rhinoplasty and cheek liposuction.

So, is plastic surgery set to stay in China? One would have to think so. The county appears to be just at the initial outset of its growth as an economic power. As it continues to grow, the plastic surgery market should do so as well.
