Male Breast Augmentation
The considerations for male breast augmentation are slightly different to those of women. We will attempt to address some of these in this article.
Male Breast Augmentation
Male breast augmentation is performed for a number of reasons. Reconstruction following illness or accident, cosmetic in the case of entertainment industry professionals or due to self image considerations. The techniques utilised to achieve the desired results are similar to those used when operating on women. However consideration such as breast feeding are not an issue.
Implant sizes vary according to the results desired. There are silicone gel filled as well as saline filled implants available. Your safety should be the main consideration when deciding on who should perform surgery and where. By consulting your national society of plastic surgeons you will receive a list of qualified, board certified surgeons in your neighbourhood. Visit a number of different surgeons in order to assess whether you are happy to work with them. Before making a final decision, request references from satisfied patients. They can testify to the quality and service received and you can see first hand the results of your chosen surgeon.
There are risks associated with male breast augmentation that are best discussed fully with your doctor before commencing with the procedure. Your doctor should be able to answer all your questions fully as well as take the time to provide an explanation of the risks involved. Your main area of concern should be the placement of the implant as well as the longevity of the device. Both saline and silicone gel-filled implants may rupture. This results in leakage into the surrounding tissue. Capsular contracture results from scar tissue forming around the implant resulting in hardening of the area as well as distortion. You may experience pain in one or both breasts. There may also be a reduction or loss of feeling in the breast and nipple.
You may require additional surgery to correct mistakes. You should also know that implants will need to be replaced or removed at some time in the future. The long-term effects of silicone gel-filled implants have not been established. Although the FDA has approved their use you should discuss the alternatives with your surgeon.
Male breast augmentation carries the same risks and complications as any other surgery. You would do well to fully consult your doctor on the dangers and possible problems that may occur during the procedure as well as post operatively.
