Breast Augmentation - Bottoming Out

Plastic surgery is booming, contrary to those who ask, is breast augmentation bottoming out? Nothing could be further from the truth.

Breast Augmentation - Bottoming Out

In the United States alone between 1997 and 2005, there has been in excess of a 200% increase in cosmetic surgery procedures. With the dangers involved, you may well ask is breast augmentation bottoming out? But along with all other cosmetic surgery there has been an increase here too. More and more women and even men are having breast surgery each year.

It seems that the risks associated with major surgery do not deter the many individuals who flock to cosmetic surgeries each day. From liposuction to eyelid surgery, the demand seems to grow year by year throughout the world. In 2005 alone 324 000 liposuction treatments were performed along with 291 000 breast augmentations.

The risks associated with breast augmentation surgery include post operative bleeding, infection, capsular contracture and implant rupture. Bleeding and excess fluid result in further operations to correct the problems. Infection is a risk with any surgery and is treated according to its’ severity. Capsular contracture can occur in either one or both breasts. This is caused by scar tissue formation around the implant that leads to changes in shape and texture of the breast. Implant rupture risks increase with size and activity and can lead to serious complications. All these risks can be mitigated by carefully following your doctors’ post-operative care protocol.

With the increase in non-surgical  procedures one would think that there would be a decrease in the more dangerous surgical procedures. There is however no sign of breast augmentation bottoming out. With the ever-growing emphasis on looks and beauty, the breast augmentation procedure is high on the list of desired alternatives. This trend is lead by the United States where patients of all races and nationalities visit to obtain the latest technological advantages.

Far from breast augmentation bottoming out, it’s actually expanding at between 4 and 5% per year. As procedures become safer and the implants themselves improve, more and more patients join the queue for augmentation. Due to the well publicized cosmetic surgery performed on Hollywood actors and actresses more people find the operations desirable and acceptable. Improved marketing methods by doctors and clinics means that far more people are being exposed to the benefits of this elective surgery.

In the final analysis, due to increasing demand to look good, feel better and “keep up with the Jones’s”, cosmetic surgery looks set to continue in popularity for some time to come. As for breast augmentation bottoming out, the only reductions in sight are waistlines and thighs.
