Ashlee Simpson’s Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, or nose jobs, has always been a surgical procedure associated with the rich and famous. Ashlee Simpson’s Rhinoplasty is an example.

Ashlee Simpson’s Rhinoplasty

Last year, Ashlee Simpson, the younger sister of pop diva Jessica Simpson, and an entertainer in her own right, received a Rhinoplasty procedure that stirred a more than normal amount of controversy. Although Ashlee has been somewhat in the shadow of older sister, Jessica, she has forged a rather successful music and acting career and enjoys a great deal of public scrutiny. It was known that she had suffered from an eating disorder when younger and this would indicate some insecurity with her self image.

Ashlee had a rather distinctive nose. It was slightly curved with what might be described as a hook. This is an example of how inexact a discussion of “beauty” can be when discussing nose shape or other features. There are many people who found Ashlee Simpson very attractive and thought the shape of her nose added “cuteness” to her face. It also tended to make her look different than sister, Jessica, who had a much smaller, straighter, and classic nose shape.

In the early stages of her career, Ashlee went out of her way to downplay any resemblance to Jessica. She dressed in a completely different style and even dyed her blondish hair black. In 2006, she posed for a series of magazine covers and in the stories that accompanied these covers, she spoke of her own satisfaction with her appearance. She had almost become a spokeswoman for the young and independent woman who did not use personal appearance as criteria for success. Then, she had a Rhinoplasty procedure to straighten her nose and make her look more like Jessica.

This sudden change of direction outraged the readers of some of the magazines that had promoted her “proud of my own body” stories. They felt the decision to get a Rhinoplasty operation right after making those statements was a betrayal. Angry letters flooded the magazines and rumors circulated that she had had lip augmentation, chin reduction, and even breast implementation as well. Although these rumors were unconfirmed, there was no denying the Rhinoplasty. The before and after pictures were conclusive.

Ashlee Simpson might have put the best spin on the whole issue herself, and at the same time made a point about Rhinoplasty in general. She said that it was a personal decision that each person has to make for themselves. Her point was that she did it to make herself feel better and not for reasons related to other people. This is a perfect guideline for any time of Rhinoplasty. You should ask the question--Is this right for me?  If the answer is yes, that should be all that matters.
