Tummy Tuck Complications

Although most plastic surgery is not medically necessary, that does not mean you should treat it lightly. Like every surgery, tummy tuck complications are a slight risk with abdominoplasty.

Tummy Tuck Complications

All surgery carries implicit complications that occur rarely, but you need to be aware of. There are two major tummy tuck procedures: mini tummy tuck and full or traditional tummy tuck. Both of them carry certain risks despite their classification as just cosmetic procedures.

Although well differentiated, both tummy tuck procedures can pose risk of complications basically related to the surgical process, period of time exposed to anesthesia, or during the healing process. It is estimated that tummy tuck complications of at least a minor degree occur in less than five percent of all procedures. This percentage decreases when the operation is performed by a qualified, board certified plastic surgeon.

Overall, complications are more frequent in full tummy tuck surgery than in mini tummy tucks. In both cases, the most harmful complication is undesirable scars or unfulfilled expectations that patients may want as results of their tummy tuck surgery. If you have made the decision to undergo tummy tuck surgery, talk to the surgeon, who will give you a realistic overview of the procedure. Make absolutely sure that you look at before and after pictures from the surgeons previous patients so you can get an understanding of what the resulting physical appearance will be in your case.

In addition, the surgeon can determine your risk chances after reviewing your full medical history, and talk to you about your lifestyle and habits. Smokers are often encouraged to quit cigars for a while, particularly after the procedure. Your current medication and dietary supplementation can also have an impact on tummy tuck complications. A tummy tuck will make an immediate difference in your appearance, but you must make an effort to maintain the results through exercise and diet.

Traditional tummy tuck surgery requires at least 6 hours to be performed. During this time period, anesthesia can trigger tummy tuck complications.  Many people who are under sedative action of any type during a prolonged period may develop different reactions, including blood clots, respiratory or heart complications and even death. Obviously, these are rare risks or the surgery would not be allowed by medical licensing boards, but there is still some risk you should take into account.

All and all, tummy tuck complications are no more common than those found in other procedures. Make sure to discuss the potential risks with your plastic surgeon and determine if you are comfortable with the benefits versus potential risks.
